When you need trailer brakes

Chevrolet publishes the threshold plainly: trailer brakes are required above 2,000 lb of trailer weight on full-size trucks and SUVs, and above 1,500 lb on everything else. Requirements also vary by state, and some states set it lower.
"These are required above a 2,000-lb. trailer weight on Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe, and above a 1,500-lb. trailer weight on all other models. (Brake requirements vary by state; consult state laws for actual requirements.)"

Common questions

When are trailer brakes required?

Chevrolet publishes: required above 2,000 lb of trailer weight on Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe, and above 1,500 lb on all other models. Brake requirements also vary by state and some states set the threshold lower, so check your state's law as well.

Do I need a brake controller?

If the trailer has electric brakes, yes — the controller is what operates them from the cab. Many recent trucks have one integrated from the factory; check before buying. Surge brakes, common on boat trailers, are self-contained and need no controller.

What is the difference between 4-pin and 7-pin?

A 4-pin flat carries running lights, turn signals and brake lights only. A 7-pin round adds the electric brake line, a reverse line and a charge line. If the trailer has electric brakes you need the 7-pin.
